Origin: Indonesia, Sumatra.
Temperature: 22.8°C (73°F) is ideal, but they will tolerate temperatures from 20°C (68°F) to 24°C (74°F).GH: 6°dGH, soft.Tolerates a range from 4°dGH to
10°dGH.pH: 6.4 is ideal, but will tolerate 6.0 to 7.0 well.
Avoidsudden changes in pH.
Hardiness: Checkered barbs are relatively hardy, but should not be used to cycle a tank. Perform regular partial water changes.
Feeding: Checkered barbs will enjoy a high quality flake alternated with small live foods such as fresh algae, frozen green beans, and mosquito Iarvae. They require fresh vegetable bits to display their best color.
If fresh algae isn't available, offer an algae or Spirulina wafer. Feed daily.
Compatible tankmates: Gouramis, a red-tailed or rainbow shark, and tetras would all be acceptable tankmates.
Avoid these tankmates: Expensive live plants. Live plants are fine, but they may be nipped occasionally. Also avoidvery small fish, such as neon tetras, or fry of any
species,African cichlids, or really aggressive fish.
Breeding: Checkered barbs are egg-layers. Females are fuller, and will swell with eggs prior to spawning. Offer live food, as suggested above, to prepare the adults for breeding.
A breeding tank should be used, with soft water, temperature 24°C (76°F), hardness not over 5°dGH, anda pH of 6,2.Thick plantings of myriophyllum or nitella are recommended.
Spawning will happen above the plants, near the surface, one egg at a time. Select a single male and female for the breeding tank. When spawning is complete, the parents should be removed. The eggs hatch in about 3 to 4 days. Feed powdered foods, followed by crumbled flake.
